Safety of lithium batteries, IEC 62619:2022 comes into force

7 July 2022

IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) has published the new lithium battery safety standard IEC 62619:2022.

Due to the increasing use of lithium technologies in various types of applications, IEC – the world leading organization for standardization in the electrotechnical field – has revised and updated the standard dedicated to lithium battery safety testing.

THE IEC 62619:2022 STANDARD

The IEC 62619:2022 standard “Secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes – Safety requirements for secondary lithium cells and batteries, for use in industrial applications” specifies requirements and tests for the safe operation of secondary lithium cells and batteries used in industrial applications, including:

  • Stationary applications: telecommunications, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), electrical energy storage system, emergency power, and similar applications;
  • Motive applications: forklift truck, golf cart, automated guided vehicle (AGV), railway vehicles and marine vehicles, with the exception of road vehicles.

The new edition of the international standard is already in force and replaces the previous IEC 62619:2017. This second edition has some differences from the previous one, taking into account the versatility of use of lithium batteries in different sectors and the intrinsic hazard of batteries, depending on their intended use.

ECM SERVICES FOR LITHIUM BATTERIES

Ente Certificazione Macchine, through continuous updating of its staff and equipment, is able to provide a professional service that is always in line with the latest regulatory changes. On the strength of its consolidated international experience in lithium battery testing activities, the ECM Testing Laboratory is already structured to meet the needs of companies wishing to test their products according to the new standard.
