Following Great Britain’s exit from the EU through Brexit, the British government introduced the product conformity assessment UKCA mark (UK Conformity Assessed) for products and equipment to be placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales).
The UKCA mark applies to most products that require CE marking in the European Union under the main EU product directives, including Machinery, Lifts, ATEX, Pressure Equipment, Medical Devices, Electromagnetic Compatibility, Radio Equipment, Low Voltage Electrical Equipment, etc. The requirements for UKCA marking are similar to those for CE marking and define the technical characteristics of the product, conformity assessment procedures and applicable standards. [For more information on the UKCA marking, visit the UK government website]
The UKCA marking came into force on 1 January 2021, however the British government has provided a transition period to allow companies to comply with the new UKCA marking requirements. Currently, Great Britain still recognises the CE mark as valid, and companies can continue to place their CE-marked products and equipment on the UK market under the applicable EU directives.
On 14 November 2022, the government decided to extend the deadline for the transition period by two years (previously set for 31 December 2022). According to the new timeline, the CE marking will be accepted to place products on the UK market until 31 December 2024.
This means that from 1st January 2025 only UKCA-marked products will be allowed to enter the UK market.
