Unmanned drones: ECM tests compliance with safety standards

17 March 2022

Ente Certificazione Macchine carries out testing and conformity assessment of Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS), commonly known as drones.

Drones represent a technological innovation that is rapidly spreading. In recent years, we have observed an exponential growth of this market, encouraged by the large use in many sectors.

Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) are found in civil, military and industrial environments. They can be used for a wide range of applications: from environmental monitoring to surveillance of restricted areas, from shooting for entertainment purposes to transporting goods. Depending on the intended use, therefore, the device will have different dimensions, specific performance characteristics and be fitted with appropriate equipment such as cameras, tracking devices, detection sensors, and so on.

DRONE SAFETY

To be marketed and used within the European Union, drones (i.e. unmanned aircraft) must meet the safety and performance requirements imposed by the relevant regulations and standards.

To check the compliance of the device, it is necessary to carry out specific testing and laboratory procedures, in order to verify the levels of safety and performance. Testing activities will differ according to the characteristics and function of the device, which must comply with specific reference standards according to its intended use.

Safety must not be overlooked. For this reason, it is essential to carry out the necessary tests in laboratories with the appropriate skills and equipment, in order to ensure the marketing of compliant devices and their correct use by the end user.

ECM SERVICES

In order to keep its services at the cutting edge, to meet the needs of the market, Ente Certificazione Macchine turns its attention to this emerging and constantly growing sector. With the aim of expanding its competences at technical/regulatory level, ECM – already Notified Body n.1282 for the European directives Machinery 2006/42/EC, RED 2014/53/EU and EMC 2014/30/EU – is preparing to offer a complete and efficient service to companies in the drone sector.

The ECM Testing Laboratory is equipped with the most advanced instrumentation – including a state-of-the-art semi-anechoic chamber – and a highly qualified technical staff. Here, it is possible to perform a variety of tests and debugging activities on electrical/electronic devices and radio equipment, regarding electromagnetic compatibility, electrical safety, and anything else necessary to assess their safety performance.
