Voluntary certifications issued by accredited bodies, clarification by the European Commission

22 September 2022

The European Commission – Directorate General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs – has issued a circular to regulate the voluntary certification activity by notified bodies, for products subject to applicable EU legislation.

The document “NOTE FOR THE ATTENTION OF MARKET SURVEILLANCE AUTHORITIES AND NOTIFYING AUTHORITIES” issued on 14 September 2022, addresses to market surveillance authorities, notified bodies and interested parties. It clarifies and specifies the provisions that notified bodies must follow when carrying out voluntary certification activities.

“We are very pleased that the European Commission has finally expressed its position on the subject of voluntary certification,” explains ECM’s Director Luca Bedonni, “providing a useful guideline for notified bodies to follow when issuing voluntary certificates.”
