Nearly half of Italian companies have suffered at least one cyberattack in the last twelve months. This is the most alarming data to emerge from the 2026 edition of the digital resilience report, which photographs a business landscape under constant pressure, but also progressively more aware.<\/p>\n\n

The cyber risk landscape in Italy is becoming increasingly complex and pervasive. According to the new ‘Cyber Insurance and AI 2026’ research, commissioned by QBE Insurance and conducted by Opinium, 47% of Italian companies recorded a cyberattack over the past year. This figure confirms a sharp upward trend compared to 2025, outlining a continuously expanding attack surface and threats with fluid and sophisticated dynamics.<\/p>\n\n

ECONOMIC IMPACT AND BUSINESS CONTINUITY<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

Cyberattacks are no longer just a technological issue confined to IT departments, but a full-blown threat to organizations’ financial stability. In fact, the research highlights that 50% of the affected companies suffered a direct loss of revenue. Cybercriminals, leveraging ransomware and extortion in particular, deliberately aim to disrupt business operations, exploiting organizations’ sensitivity to business interruptions to maximize pressure for ransom payments.<\/p>\n\n

THE SUPPLY CHAIN AS A THREAT VECTOR<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

Another crucial aspect that emerged from the survey concerns third-party vulnerability. Indeed, 58% of the companies that suffered an attack recognize the decisive role of the supply chain as the vector of the intrusion.<\/p>\n\n

In particular:<\/p>\n\n

    \n
  • 31% attribute a portion of the attacks they suffered to external suppliers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • 17% believe that most of the attacks stemmed from third-party vulnerabilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • 9% state that all of the breaches they suffered can be traced back to the supply chain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

    THE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FACTOR: OPPORTUNITIES AND RISKS<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

    The year 2026 also marks the definitive consolidation of Artificial Intelligence within Italian business processes: 71% of companies use it daily, and 87% expect positive impacts on their business over the next two years. However, technological adoption is proving to be a double-edged sword.<\/p>\n\n

    Twenty-four percent of companies stated that they suffered at least one cyber incident in the past year where AI was deployed to support the attack. Malicious actors are using predictive algorithms and automation to refine phishing techniques (through highly targeted fraudulent emails or calls) and evade traditional security systems.<\/p>\n\n

    INVESTMENT RESPONSE: THE DRIVE TOWARDS RESILIENCE<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

    In the face of such pressing threats, the production system’s response shows signs of strong maturation.<\/p>\n\n

    Today, 85% of Italian companies have a structured Incident Response Plan in place, up from the 80% recorded the previous year.<\/p>\n\n

    Furthermore, 71% of companies plan to increase their cybersecurity budget over the next 12 months. This shift reflects the need to align not only with the evolution of cybercrime but also with the European and national regulatory framework, which is heavily influenced by the entry into force of the NIS2 directive and the recent guidelines issued by the National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
