Cybersecurity and compliance: the new regulatory challenges

19 October 2026

In this increasingly critical context, cybersecurity will become a crucial issue under the new Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230.

One of the most impactful novelties concerns the requirement to integrate cybersecurity as an essential element of product safety.

As of January 20, 2027, compliance with cybersecurity requirements will no longer be an option or a best practice, but a binding obligation in order to place any machinery on the European Union market. This paradigm shift reflects the growing interconnection of industrial plants and the need to prevent cyberattacks that could compromise worker safety.

The new regulation focuses on protecting everything that is vital to the correct functioning of the machinery. Specifically, manufacturers must ensure that:

  • Every connection (remote or local) does not become a gateway to alter the safety functions of the machinery;
  • Critical software and data are protected against tampering, whether accidental or intentional (cyberattacks);
  • Control devices are designed to withstand unauthorized access attempts.

To adapt to the new regulation, the design process must include three fundamental steps:

  1. Implementation of countermeasures: Adopt technical solutions (such as encryption, authentication, and logging systems) to neutralize or mitigate identified risks.
  2. Cyber threat analysis: Identify potential attack vectors specific to the type of machinery and its intended use context.
  3. Risk assessment (ISO 12100): Integrate digital risks into the traditional mechanical and operational risk assessment.

Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 drives manufacturers toward a holistic vision of safety: it is no longer enough for a machine to be ‘physically’ safe—it must also be ‘digitally’ safe. Preparing today means analyzing your systems, updating design procedures, and ensuring that your products are ready for the technological challenge of 2027.

Those who choose to act early, relying on the support of experts, can drastically reduce the risk of delays and unforeseen costs.

In this scenario of heightened critical importance, Ente Certificazione Macchine (ECM) positions itself as a qualified partner to support companies in achieving and maintaining machinery compliance.

Our mission is to ensure that every system—from a single machine to a complex production line—meets the highest standards of efficiency and safety. Contact us now to evaluate your machinery!
