Protecting operators: guard containment verification through impact testing

9 October 2026

The safety of industrial operators largely depends on the ability of guards (whether wire mesh, polycarbonate panels, or safety glass) to withstand accidental impacts. To ensure that a protective barrier complies with current regulations, it is essential to subject it to dynamic resistance testing.

At our laboratory, we perform impact tests using the pendulum method—a rigorous procedure that simulates an object colliding with the protective structure.

The test aims to verify the mechanical resistance of the panel and its fastening systems (posts, clips, screws). The procedure consists of dropping an impact body (the pendulum) from a predetermined height, causing it to strike the center of the guard or the areas identified as most critical.

Based on relevant standards and customer specifications, we use different types of impactors to simulate real-world scenarios.

A large flexible bag is used to simulate an operator accidentally falling against the guard.

Objective: Verify that the guard does not detach and that deformation does not allow the body to pass through the barrier or come into contact with the hazard zone.

The test is performed using a rigid metallic mass. This impact body simulates a mechanical component or workpiece being projected after detaching from the machinery.

Structural resistance: The test highlights whether the panel material (for example, a polymer) tends to crack or if the retention systems fail under the impulsive load.

Multiple impacts: Tests can be repeated to evaluate material fatigue.

During testing, our technicians analyze several key factors:

  • Residual Deformation: We measure how much the panel has shifted from its original position to ensure that safety distances are always maintained.
  • Panel Integrity: The material must absorb the energy without fragmenting in a dangerous manner.
  • Fastener Integrity: It is essential that the panel remains anchored to the supporting structure. A failure of the supports indicates the need to redesign the containment system.

Performing an impact test in our certified laboratory is not only a regulatory requirement, but also a guarantee of quality for machinery manufacturers and a moral duty toward worker safety.

Our technical reports provide the necessary data for CE marking and for validating the risk assessment, ensuring that the installed guard is truly effective against mechanical hazards.
