ECM successfully passes Accredia audit for the extension of the RED Directive scope in cybersecurity

22 November 2024

Ente Certificazione Macchine reaffirms its commitment to quality and safety, successfully completing the audit for the extension of its accreditation as Notified Body No. 1282 to verify the cybersecurity requirements established by the RED Directive 2014/53/EU.

We are pleased to share another significant milestone: in recent days, ECM successfully passed the audit conducted by Accredia’s assessment team. This audit was aimed at extending ECM’s accreditation for the RED Directive 2014/53/EU, Article 3.3, points (d), (e), and (f), in the field of cybersecurity. Once officially formalized, this extension will allow ECM to verify the compliance of certain radio equipment with the essential cybersecurity requirements outlined in the RED Directive, strengthening its role as a key player in the certification sector.

The RED Directive, through Article 3.3 (d), (e), and (f), sets essential cybersecurity requirements for the protection of network operations, personal data, and privacy, as well as for fraud prevention.

These requirements apply to devices connected to the Internet or capable of recording, storing and sharing personal information, such as smartphones, smartwatches, baby monitors, and other wireless devices. Through Delegated Regulation 2022/30/EU, in force since 1 February 2022, the European Commission has made these requirements mandatory for all manufacturers of radio equipment as of 1 August 2025.

The extension of ECM’s accreditation will enable our company to support manufacturers and importers of radio equipment destined for the EU market by verifying compliance with cybersecurity requirements. To ensure that devices are compliant, it is essential that manufacturers:

  • Verify that their products meet the mandatory standards,
  • Implement the required functionalities to align with the RED Directive requirements,
  • Begin the certification process timely.

Currently, ECM is awaiting to receive the updated accreditation certificate, which will formalize the extension.

The positive outcome of the audit marks another step forward for ECM, reinforcing its leading position in the certification sector. This achievement is the result of the dedication and expertise of our Technical Manager Giovanni Vita, who professionally coordinated all the necessary activities.

Following the successful audit, ECM is preparing to assist manufacturers and importers of radio equipment in verifying the compliance of their devices with the cybersecurity requirements established by the RED Directive. With a constant focus on market needs and regulatory updates, ECM aims to expand its range of services and consolidate itself as a trusted partner for companies looking to navigate the evolving regulatory landscape of new technologies with confidence.
